Key Stage 1 & 2 Curriculum

KEY STAGE 1 CURRICULUM

As an independent, all-through school, Broadoaks British School follows the National Curriculum for England and Wales, ensuring that our pupils receive a well-rounded and excellent education from the very delicate foundation to a bold upper Key Stage level.

Our KS1 Curriculum offers a dynamic learning framework for children aged 5-7 (Year 1 to Year 2); transitioning from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) into a more structured and formal learning environment.

Underpinned by our school’s core values of Excellence, Integrity, Discipline, and Respect, the KS1 curriculum at Broadoaks supports every child’s social, emotional, and physical development. It is carefully crafted to be inclusive and adaptable, ensuring each child’s unique learning needs are met. Through a blend of hands-on activities, collaborative projects, and engaging lessons, we aim to inspire a love for learning whilst helping each child build confidence and a strong sense of self.

   CORE SUBJECTS

> English:  Our pupils engage with various texts and writing styles to enhance their reading comprehension and vocabulary. Our highly effective Read Write Inc. phonics programme is key to developing early reading, writing, and speaking skills. Our pupils also receive practical lessons to refine their speaking and listening skills for world-class communication.

> Mathematics: In Mathematics, pupils explore fundamental concepts such as basic numeracy and operations, shapes, and measurements. The curriculum emphasises problem-solving and mathematical reasoning, encouraging our pupils to engage in practical lesson activities that make their learning more engaging.

> Science: Our Science curriculum sparks curiosity as our pupils explore the world around them. Topics like living things, materials, and physical processes are introduced through inquiry-based learning and hands-on experiments, encouraging children to develop a scientific mindset and engage in exploration and discovery.

Beyond the core subjects, our KS1 curriculum is rich in other subjects that broaden pupils' horizons and enhance their creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration

> Art and Design: In Art, children are encouraged to express their creativity through various mediums, including drawing, painting, and crafting. Pupils learn about different artists and art forms, helping them develop a deeper appreciation for the visual world whilst honing their artistic skills.

> Physical Education (PE): Our PE curriculum promotes physical health and well-being, helping children develop coordination, teamwork, and a good understanding of the importance of an active lifestyle. Some of the sports activities that make up our PE programme include cricket, badminton, volleyball, football, and table tennis.

> Modern Foreign Languages  (French): Learning a new language at this stage enhances cognitive development and promotes an appreciation for different cultures. Our KS1 French language programme introduces the pupils to basic vocabulary and phrases.

> Computing: Our Computing curriculum focuses on digital literacy. Our pupils develop essential skills for using technology safely and effectively, learning the basics of programming and navigating digital tools that will serve them well in an increasingly technology-driven world.

> Music: In Music, children explore sounds, rhythms, and melodies. For the KS1, pupils are gradually introduced to basic vocal techniques, musical instruments, and foundational music concepts.
With small class sizes—capped at 15 to 20 pupils—our teachers can provide personalised attention and support to each child. This ensures that every pupil has the opportunity to thrive.

Additionally, our Achievement Centre for Excellence (ACE) department ensures that pupils with special educational needs or disabilities receive tailored support to help them excel academically and personally.

KEY STAGE 2 CURRICULUM

At Key Stage 2 (KS2), the pupil's learning journey deepens and becomes more complex. Covering Year 3 to Year 6, the Key Stage 2 curriculum builds on the foundational skills developed in Key Stage 1 for pupils aged 7 to 11. At Broadoaks British School, the Key Stage 2 curriculum is designed to challenge pupils whilst encouraging independent learning, and personal growth.

At Broadoaks, we provide a comprehensive and balanced KS2 curriculum that prepares pupils for success in later education and beyond. At this stage, pupils are encouraged to take more responsibility for their learning whilst being supported through personalised projects and regular assessments.

   CORE SUBJECTS

> English: The KS2 English curriculum further develops pupils' reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Pupils study a variety of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry texts to improve their comprehension and vocabulary whilst emphasising writing tasks to enhance grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

> Mathematics: In KS2, pupils delve deeper into number operations, geometry, fractions, measurements, and data handling. They also engage in more technical problem-solving and reasoning, applying mathematical concepts to real-world scenarios. The subject goal at this stage is to develop mathematical fluency, accuracy, and logical thinking in our pupils.

> Science: The Science curriculum at this stage encourages inquiry-based learning where pupils develop their investigative skills further to carry out more scientific projects either individually or collaboratively.

Alongside the core subjects, KS2 pupils engage with other subjects such as:

> Art & Design: For KS2, pupils explore various artistic mediums, including painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture through a range of engaging projects and activities. They also learn about the works and techniques of renowned artists, both past and present, to gain a deeper understanding of art history and appreciation. Pupils are lightly encouraged to experiment, take risks, and develop their unique artistic voice, while also refining their technical skills and processes.

> Physical Education (PE): The PE curriculum in KS2 focuses on developing pupils' skills in various sports, teamwork, and healthy competition. Our pupils navigate different sports for both individual and team activities to identify their physical strengths and weaknesses whilst working on their game technical know-how.

> Modern Foreign Languages: In KS2, pupils continue to develop their language skills, expanding their vocabulary with a greater focus on developing conversational abilities in the languages.

> Computing: The Computing programme for the KS2 pupils advances to include more complex digital skills, such as coding and data handling. Pupils learn to use digital tools more effectively.

> Music: Our Key Stage 2 pupils explore more complex musical concepts, including rhythm, melody, and harmony as they learn to appreciate and create music from diverse genres and cultures. Instrumental tuition is also provided in this key stage music program, with pupils having the opportunity to pick and learn the basics of a musical instrument like the saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, piano, or any other instrument in our music room catalogue.
