Special Educational Needs
Introducing our SEN/ACE Department
The ACE Department
At Broadoaks British International Teeneetodds Day Nursery, we believe that “Every Child Matters.” Our Achievement Centre for Excellence (ACE) Department is dedicated to ensuring that our vision for inclusive education is both visible and a reality. Our goal is to provide every learner with the support they need to meaningfully belong to their school and wider community, feel valued for their contributions, engage purposefully in learning, and experience academic, cultural, social, and emotional success in a nurturing and supportive environment.
Children learn at different speeds and in different ways. Teachers plan their lessons and choose various materials and methodologies to help each child learn best. However, some children may need more help than others and may have difficulty with:
- Reading, writing, and numbers.
- Speaking and listening.
- Developing social skills.
- Physical skills.
- Emotional, mental health, and behavior.
To extend our services and ensure all learners achieve success, the ACE Department works collaboratively with teachers, parents, and specialists to craft SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound) learning targets, strategies, resources, and interventions tailored to individual students' needs. The ACE Department provides direct support to students identified as needing additional help, either on a one-to-one basis or in small-group intensive instruction. We also offer specialist support, training, and advice to teachers and parents.
Recognizing that many students benefit from additional support as they grow as readers, writers, mathematicians, citizens, and multilingual speakers, our learning support specialists and classroom teachers continuously observe, assess, and evaluate to ensure student's learning needs are met. This support may be temporary or long-term, depending on the student's unique needs.
For children identified as requiring additional support, parents are invited to meet with the ACE team to discuss their child's needs and agree on a targeted intervention using an Individual Education Plan (IEP). This collaborative approach helps set, implement, and monitor targets to improve educational outcomes.
The ACE Department is comprised of well-qualified and experienced teachers and facilitators who specialize in working with students with learning differences. They possess a broad and deep understanding of specific strategies and programs beneficial for students who require a differentiated approach to learning. Our ACE Department offers a variety of personalized support programs to ensure every child has opportunities to progress toward identified goals, building on individual strengths and successes to achieve their full potential. The ACE Department also provides one-to-one support for students with well-being and emotional needs and offers speech sessions with a Speech and Language Therapist.
Partnership working is key to our success in supporting any student. We focus on building and developing relationships with parents and carers to ensure everyone works together with the needs of the individual child at the heart of all we do.
All staff at BBS and TTDN are committed to ensuring that all our children learn in supportive, inspiring, and motivating environments. Lessons are differentiated to meet individual needs, and additional support is provided individually or in small groups to enhance learning opportunities for identified students. We encourage all members of the BBS and TTDN community to work together, showing respect, tolerance, and understanding, and to look for strengths within our diverse school community.
The Solihull Approach
As the first school in Africa to become Solihull Approach certified, our team understands the importance of child psychology and emotional well-being. Regular professional development sessions are provided by experienced UK-based educational psychologists, ensuring our team is well-versed in international best practices.
EAL Support
At the Achievement Centre for Excellence (ACE), we are dedicated to supporting our students to become fluent English speakers through personalized EAL programmes that engage, motivate, and inspire. We work with children at all levels of English language development, ensuring they receive the tailored support they need to succeed academically and personally. Our school community comprises learners from numerous nationalities, many of whom are already proficient in English. For those developing their English in a school context, we provide specialist support within the mainstream classroom and through dedicated small group or one-to-one EAL classes.
During the entry assessment phase, children with English as an Additional Language (EAL) will undergo a separate English Language assessment to determine their level of proficiency. Following this, a detailed and comprehensive support plan will be established in the form of an Individualised Education Plan (IEP). This plan is reviewed each term to ensure that the support remains aligned with the student's evolving needs. Children in our EAL programme are either taught individually, in small groups, or supported in lessons, depending on their age and English proficiency.
EAL students have access to small group or one-to-one tuition with a qualified EAL teacher who collaborates closely with the class teacher to ensure all children can access the curriculum effectively. For students who do not require the full EAL programme but need additional assistance with reading, writing, listening, speaking, and study skills, we offer tailored support. Our dedicated EAL teachers create detailed plans customized to each student's needs, ensuring they receive the highest quality education and support. We strive to make every child's journey in learning English a successful and enriching experience.
