Key Stage 1 Curriculum
In Key Stage 1, we build on the foundation laid through the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). It is the beginning of primary education which comprises Year 1 and Year 2 of children ages 5 to 7. At this stage, teaching becomes more formal with a more structured timetable. Although more structured, we provide a balance between play and learning.
Our pupils are introduced to the National Curriculum for England, with a well-designed framework of education which enables our pupils to deepen their knowledge and understanding of key concepts. As a result, children still have access to provision areas to secure their learning through play. Our lessons are theme-based and are delivered using a creative, cross-curricular approach. With a high focus on achievement and attainment, we ensure that our children make notable progress in English and Mathematics. We adopt a highly inclusive approach to learning; raising the standards of every pupil whether having special education needs, learning English as an additional language or working below or above age-related expectations. We support and challenge every child to achieve their full potential.
At Broadoaks British School, we regard the acquisition and development of children’s key skills in reading and writing. Our English lessons are delivered through themes and literary genres; fiction, non-fiction and poetry. We equip children with the ability to develop as effective communicators through developing spoken and written skills. A wide range of literature is essential to developing a love for reading.
We develop reading and comprehension skills through the Read Write Inc phonics program (RWI) and support children through shared/guided reading. We ensure that our pupils are proficient and fluent readers, writing more fluently and creatively at the end of KS1. At this stage our pupils develop mathematically, they establish a solid foundation in addition, subtraction, and basic problem-solving. We use the White Rose mathematics Curriculum where there is emphasis on real-life problem-solving activities, mental-maths strategies and the process of learning from concrete-pictorial-abstract. The children are exposed to a wide range of learning resources to make learning fun and engaging.
In Science, there is a focus on working scientifically which specifies the understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science. Working scientifically is embedded within the content of Biology, chemistry, physics, focusing on the key features of scientific enquiry. Pupils engage through; observing over time; pattern seeking; identifying, classifying and grouping; comparative and fair testing(controlled investigations); and researching using secondary sources.
Furthermore, social and emotional development is paramount as children learn to work collaboratively, follow instructions, and confidently express their thoughts and ideas. They form friendships, acquire conflict-resolution skills, and become more independent. Our core values; excellence, respect, integrity and discipline are embedded in PSHE as well as all other aspects of their learning.
Key Stage 2 Curriculum
Broadoaks British School Primary offers a Key Stage 2 curriculum that is balanced, broad and secure, which is primarily based on:
